Important Notice About Fracture Billing

If your child receives treatment for a fracture today (including casting, bracing, or splinting), please review these important billing facts:

  • It is categorized as “Surgery”: The American Medical Association (AMA) lists all fracture care under the SURGERY section of billing books. Your child did not have surgery. This is just how insurance companies classify the code.
  • It is a “Packaged” fee: This single fee covers the initial treatment (first cast/splint) and routine follow-up visits for the global recovery period (typically 10 to 90 days).
  • Some items are separate: X-rays, durable medical equipment (boots, slings, braces), and replacement casts are separate charges not included in the package.
  • Deductibles apply: Because insurance views this as a surgical code, your plan’s deductibles and co-insurance usually apply instead of a standard office visit fee.

We are legally required to use these codes. We highly encourage you to contact your insurance provider with any specific out-of-pocket questions.
